Furniture Repairs

We provide a wide range of furniture repair services. In our work we have seen many dreadful attempts at repairing furniture B nails, screws, bailing wire, even rubber bands have been used to Afix@ problems. In reality, these attempts not only fail, but they often make the original problem worse.

Our approach is always to change the piece as little as possible and to repair the piece in the same way that it was built. This requires knowledge of a wide variety of construction and finishing techniques used by craftsmen over the last 200 years. A good repair should last a long time and be invisible.

Carvings and Turnings
We create hand carved decorative pieces for furniture. When the opportunity arises we also carve various figures just for the fun of it. Some of those are on display in our shop and are for sale.

We also turn pieces on a lathe to replace broken or missing decorative or structural pieces in furniture. On occasion we will turn decorative and functional pieces just for the fun of it. Vases, bowls, holiday ornaments... all are unique. Although, we often have a few of these on display at the shop, they don=t hang around for too long.

Fabrication of Missing Parts
Older furniture often used intricate carved or turned details to enhance the visual impact of the piece. These embellishments are delicate and occasionally get broken or lost. We can replace many of them using a variety of methods. We can carve some pieces by hand and we can turn some on the lathe. For some, we create a latex mold of the original and then make exact duplicates of even the most intricate decorations. We call this technique "cloning".

We cane or rush weave chair seats & backs and repair wicker. Please see our Caning section for more information.

We repair loose or broken chair legs, backs and arms. In most cases we will dismantle the chair, clean all the joints, repair broken tenons or pins and reassemble the piece using the same kind of glue used by the original manufacturer.

We can fabricate virtually any missing parts. Please see our Fabrication section for more information.

Tin Punching
The punched tin panels on old pie safes or jelly cabinets are often rusted or damaged beyond salvation. We can create new tin panels using traditional designs and we can create original designs to insert into new furniture or to frame and hang as a display.
